Prompt: New name. Let’s meet again, for the first time. If you could introduce yourself to strangers by another name for just one day, what would it be and why?
I think I’m going to use this prompt in a couple of different ways.
1. I actually kind of love my name. Per one of the Facebook questionnaire thingies that went around in the last year, my parents got an “F” for creativity, as Jennifers in the late 1970’s were a dime a dozen, but I don’t mind. In fact, up until sixth grade, I was actually the only Jenny in any of my classes. I like that, despite being told that I could be a Sarah or a Beth or a Heather (that person was clearly on drugs), I am a Jenny through and through. I also love that I’m Jenny Penny, JP, Penelope, Pen-Pen and a host of others. I’ll pretty much answer to anything. I also love that my parents decided on my name after seeing it written on the sand of the beach in the coastal Northern California town where I was born. I tried to recreate this for them when I made a pilgrimage there several years ago, yet can’t find a picture of it in the voluminous photographic archives I maintain…
2. If I ever find myself encumbered with unexpected celebrity, I will check into hotels under the name Carla Cabozen. The “Call it impulsive, call it compulsive” part of this Barenaked Ladies song has always sounded like that to me.
3. This one isn’t so much about me, but in the spirit of name-y-ness, I’m gonna make it fit. As many of my nearest and dearest know, it was decided long ago, and by committee, that if I ever have a child, his/her name will be Tex Robinson. Boy or girl, it doesn’t matter. Tell me that kid wouldn’t be a wicked southpaw shortstop? I decided awhile back that a more proper full name might be in order, and if this wildly hypothetical child were to be a girl, it’s only fitting that I pay homage to the great women who have truly shaped my character – my TV friends. A delightful bit of television that I have no shame in admitting I adore deserves a shout out here, as it provided some key inspiration.
If it is to be, I look forward to meeting Ally Grace Elizabeth Jules Anya Christina Emanuella Jenkins Harris Robinson. You can call her Tex.
